Hardcover: H 23.75cm x L 15.5cm. Original muted purple cloth well rubbed; spine sunned but with gilt stamped lettering and tree vignette still reasonably bright; bumping and wear at spine ends and board corners. Pale blue bookplate "Masonic Circulating Library. | Red Land Lodge, No. 3. | San Augustine, Texas. | No. 104" affixed at front pastedown's top left; an online citation notes that the Masonic Institute of San Augustine was an educational institution offering separate education for boys and girls and operated by Red Land Lodge No. 3 from September 1851 until 1861. Some foxing and toning with scattered stains and fingerprint soiling; rear free endpaper has detached top fore-edge corner which is now laid-in. Frontispiece retains toned tissue guard sheet. Several quires/leaves slightly pulled but binding is firm. Laid-in at front endpapers is a tintype portrait image of woman but with no note as to identity; book was acquired among a group of books that had antiquarian ink inscriptions of a J.D.
