Complete in four volumes: xv, 766, 720, 778, 700 pp. 8vo, quarter brown calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt embossed spine title, marbled endpapers, blue-spotted edges, place ribbons. Light rubbing to tips, vol. 2 rear fore tail and vol. 4 rear fore head corners bumped, vol. 2 a bit bowed; otherwise all volumes are very sound and tight with exceedingly fresh contents and quite handsome on the shelf. Cornelius a Lapide was a Flemish Jesuit who composed extensive commentaries on every book of Scripture apart from Psalms and Job. His ouvre remains one of the most impressive efforts by a single commentator in the history of interpretation.
