Official card for the Trotting Handicaps held at Greenwich Park race track on April 22 & 23, 1889. Single folded card. 21 x 13cm. Light crease to top and a couple of short closed tears. Good condition. Very rare. The Greenwich Park Athletic Grounds were built at the south edge of Aintree Race Course some time in 1889, suggesting that this was one of the very first meetings held there. The cinder track was designed for trotting, cycling and running races. Within a few short years the track had disintegrated and was rarely used. This card belonged to Frederick Cathcart, who was Chairman of The British Trotting Association and later became Clerk of the Course and Chairman of Cheltenham Racecourse from 1908-34, and was instrumental in establishing the Cheltenham Festival and for instigating the Gold Cup. The Cathcart Challenge Cup was named after him. On this card he is listed as a member of the Committee and is mentioned on the back as the Secretary of the Alexandra Park (London) Trotting Meeting.
