Very good. First English edition. Johan De Witt (1625- 72) was the first minister of the states of Holland and West Friesland. This work is a comprehensive review of commerce, industry, and political affairs in the late 17th century. The author defends free market principles and toleration of all who profess different creeds. He suggests that those who are discontented with their lot may seek a new fortune as colonists in the Americas or the East Indies. The ESTC notes that this work, though attributed to De Witt on the titlepage and bearing a frontispiece portrait of him, was actually authored by Dutch economist Pieter de la Court (1618-85).
