About this Item
Bruce Woodcock (1921-97), a Yorkshire pitman's son, was Britain's best and bravest heavyweight hope in the forties and early fifties. He was British and Empire heavyweight champ from 1945 to 1950, and the European title holder 1946 to1949. but perhaps he is best remembered for the fact that upon the retirement of World heavyweight champion Joe Louis on June 6, 1950, the British promoter Jack Solomons matched Woodcock with American Lee Savold for the vacant world title in front of 50,000 spectators at the White City, London. This was done under the auspices of the British Boxing Board of Control but not recognized elsewhere. In the event, a 15 round contest, Savold opened a cut above Woodcock's left eye, and the fight was stopped in the fourth and awarded to the American. On quitting the fight game he returned to Yorkshire and ran a pub in Doncaster. 8vo. 192pp. Frontispiece, 14 pages of photographs. Foxing to page edges. Original black boards, rubbed.
