About this Item

The First Published Tables Calculated by a Programmable Automatic Computer Harvard Computation Laboratory. Tables of the modified Hankel functions of order one-third and of their derivatives. xxxvi, 235, [1]pp. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1945. 266 x 202 mm. Original dark blue cloth, slight wear at extremities. Very good copy. Stamp of the N.A.M.T.C. Technical Library, Pt. Mugu, CA. First Edition of the first published tables calculated by a programmable automatic computer, fulfilling the dream of Charles Babbage articulated over a century earlier. The tables were calculated by the Harvard Mark I, the joint creation of Howard Aiken and IBM, which became operational in May 1944. The control tapes for the tables were coded at the end of August 1944 by Grace Hopper, who would go on to become one of the most famous postwar computer pioneers. Aiken's preface to the tables states that their computation took the equivalent of forty-five working days, as compared to the years the job would have taken if done by human computers using mechanical calculating devices. The tables were published as Vol. 2 of the Annals of the Computation Laboratory of Harvard University; however, the work predates by a year the Manual of Operation for the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (1946), published as Vol. 1. Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace No. 410. Bookseller Inventory # 38424
