Hardcover. Quite a small book for its ambitious title, measuring only about 3 x 5 inches. 212 pages. Bound with leather spine and much darkened marbled paper over boards, the original 18th century binding. Some weakening at the hinges, but everything still secure. Title page dated 1778, and stated Fourth Edition, with considerable additions. Text block good and tight, with margins trimmed quite close to the text. There are handwritten notes (19th century) on the endpapers, front and back. Some are additions to the historical record, some are calculations of dates, the name Miss Scholey, the earliest owner on the inside back cover. Lists and tables of kings and queens and buildings and earthquakes and discoveries and events and painters and titles of honor and founding of universities and more. Despite the updates for the 1778 edition, there is no mention of the founding of the United States. There is, however, an entry for the Boston Tea Party, described on page 7 as Tea Destroyed at Boston by the Inhabitants. for which they were severely punished.
