Tactics Volume 1. Introduction and Formal Tactics of Infantry

Tactics, Volume 1: Introduction and Formal Tactics of Infantry by Wilhelm Balck is a foundational military manual detailing the principles of infantry tactics as understood in the early 20th century. As an experienced German officer and military theorist, Balck provides comprehensive instruction on the structure, movement, and engagement methods of infantry, placing a strong emphasis on adaptability and situational awareness on the battlefield. This volume addresses fundamental aspects of infantry strategy, such as formation types, reconnaissance methods, and coordination within units, illustrating them with diagrams and examples from recent military conflicts. Balck’s work reflects the transitional period of military strategy, incorporating lessons from the Franco-Prussian War and anticipating the challenges that would arise with modern warfare tactics seen in World War I. He emphasizes the role of discipline, communication, and decisive action, aiming to prepare commanders for complex field conditions. This first volume also introduces key concepts of terrain utilization and defensive versus offensive stances, central to effective infantry operation.
