Synopsis:

Describes karate as an art and a form of self-defense and provides instruction in such techniques as punching, kicking, and blocking

Reviews:

Gr 4-6-- Like the title says, this book covers the basics of the Korean martial art. It shows stances, blocks, kicks and punches, along with self-defense and sparring. Other details, such as the correct way to tie a karate belt, and stretches to do before a work out, make this a well-rounded introduction to the sport. The text is illustrated with lackluster black-and-white photos and line drawings. Some moves are identified in both English and Korean; others are labeled only in English. While this title is meant to be an introduction, beginners may have a difficult time copying three-dimensional movement from its pages. Likewise, self-defense learned here would not prepare anyone for the level of violence one may encounter these days on the streets. Purchase only if interest in Tae Kwon Do is high. --Cathryn A.
