Taghconic

"Taghconic" by Godfrey Greylock is a nineteenth-century travelogue and regional portrait of the Berkshire Hills in western Massachusetts. The book blends lyrical descriptions of mountains, rivers, and villages with anecdotes, folklore, and sketches of notable locals. Greylock guides readers through Pittsfield's Old Elm, Washington Mountain, Undine’s Glen, Lake Ashley, Roaring Brook, Lebanon Springs, Lenox, Stockbridge, and other Berkshire landscapes, weaving in legends, Tory lore, and Shaker life. It also offers portraits of American literary figures—Hawthorne, Sedgwick, and others—along with discussions of local geology (granular quartz, sand beds) and sacred sites. Interspersed are reflective meditations on death, cemeteries, and the cultural memory of a changing rural America. Published in the 1850s, the volume preserves forgotten scenes and traditions, presenting a mosaic of Nature, culture, and memory that celebrates the beauty and complexity of the Berkshire region.
