Taking Human Rights Forward People's Union for Civil Liberties Judgments

During the emergency, Fundamental Rights suffered a serious setback. Shri Jaya Prakash Narayan, with the support of like-minded people, decided to form People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL)in the Year 1976. Shri J.B. Kripalani inaugurated its first seminar. The object of PUCL was to bring together people who believed in promotion of civil liberties and democratic way of life through peaceful means. Over nearly four decades, PUCL has faithfully followed its object and is acknowledged today in the country as a front organization, which stands against any form of repression, torture and unconstitutional measures adopted by the State to violate democratic principles and civil liberties. During these years, PUCL has done remarkable work in the field of civil liberties and human rights. PUCL has to its credit several public enquiries organized with the help of eminent persons to look into abuse of powers by the State and illegal deprivation of rights of the poor and tribals.
