The Great Mutiny - being that against the rule of the British East India Company in India in the 19th century (FYI: for those for whom the past is a foreign country). This is a very elegantly produced book with green morocco boards, gilt titles and a decorative, ribbed spine, marbled edges & endpapers. The contents include eight b/w illustrations; plus six maps; including a folding-out copy (image). It is a presentation copy (with prize name plate on the front pastedown (image): Elizabeth College, Guernsey - awarded midsummer 1914 for Proficiency in Drawing to D. E. Bird (Form IIIa) by the Principal. The college's coat of arms (founded 1825 in the reign of George IV) features very prominently in gold gilt on the book's upper board. Condition (external): very sound with some fading of the bottle green colouring in places (see main image). Condition (internal): mild to moderate tanning throughout; with occasional spotting. As is often the case, the discoloration of the pages is more marked on the preliminary and final pages (and on the frontispiece's tissue guard). pp. vii, 485. 8vo. 9th impression second edition.
