The FIRST known curiousity-seeker to visit the Pech (Pech de l'Aze) Cave in the Dordogne region of France came in 1828. The author's investigations began in 1948. Similarly Bordes work in the Combe-Grenal Cave began in 1953. The artifacts discovered, mostly flint (and bone) tool assemblages, were left behind by Neanderthals who occupied these shelters in Upper Paleolitlhic time. Lots of drawings of Acheulean and Quina Mousterian handaxes (e.g.) and some tabular data. Figure 9 gives a progressive view of cave formation, occupation(s) and collapse(s) and the effects on interpretation of archaelogical strata. 169 pages incl. index. Regional map - page 04. Cond: Black paper wrapper (white lettering) with a wrap-around graphic of BLACK and grey fissures. Very minor softness at some edges and corners. Spine fine, binding tight.
