Synopsis:

COMPLETE & UNABRIDGED. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and social commentator, who is regarded as the finest novelist of the Victorian-era. He was an exceptional creator of character, perhaps second only to Shakespeare. Through his novels, he fiercely criticised the poverty and social stratification of Victorian society. He had to leave school to work ten-hour days in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtor’s prison. In spite of his lack of formal education, he went on to become a literary juggernaut and achieved world-wide fame within his lifetime. A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, is an historical novel published in 1859. The backdrop to the main plot is the condition in French society leading up to the French Revolution and the subsequent Reign of Terror. It is set in London and Paris spanning approximately thirty six years from December, 1757 to early 1794. It recounts the tale of a French Doctor, Manette, and his imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris for eighteen years and his ensuing release to live in London with his daughter Lucie, whom he had never met. A tale of Two Cities is one of the best-selling novels of all time and one of Dickens’ most well-known works. The 45-chapter novel was published in 31 weekly instalments in Dickens' literary periodical titled All the Year Round. The first issue ran on 30 April 1859. The last one was published 30 weeks later, on 26 November. It is one of only two works of historical fiction by Charles Dickens (the other being Barnaby Rudge).
