Reviews
Blowups, tantrums, screaming, sarcasm, and stealing are all forms of anger that can threaten and ruin family life. Eastman and Rozen ( Dinosaur Brains , LJ 4/1/89) define the problem and suggest myriad solutions to deal with different kinds of anger in children, from preschoolers to teens. The authors emphasize positive ways to express feelings so that parents can stop the anger cycle. They point out that while fights among siblings are inevitable, physical aggression is never acceptable; in addition, parents should refrain from too much reasoning or moralizing in the midst of battle. This book is well thought-out and full of anecdotes and parent-friendly advice. For large parenting collections.

Is there a harder emotion for parents to handle than their children's anger? Clinical psychologist Eastman and coauthor Rozen present suggestions to break cycles of anger, along with how to discover one's own parenting and problem-solving styles. Dealing with tantrums and whining even has its own chapter; examples of how the currently popular discipline of time-out doesn't work for all kids are scattered throughout. Few books exist on this subject, and this is a good one. Jo Peer-Haas
