The author, Ralph Gun Hoy Siu (1917-1998) a Chinese-American chemist, scientist, administrator, and philosopher, argues that modern science, while extraordinarily powerful, becomes incomplete when separated from intuition, balance, ethics, and spiritual awareness. Through discussions of logic, abstraction, research, education, and leadership, the book critiques excessive specialization and purely mechanistic thinking. Siu proposes a broader intellectual framework in which scientific inquiry and human wisdom coexist harmoniously. Written during the technological optimism of the 1950s, the work anticipates later interdisciplinary debates about science, consciousness, and holistic thinking. Combining philosophy, cultural comparison, and reflections on modern society, the text remains an influential early contribution to dialogues between Eastern philosophy and Western intellectual traditions and scientific culture.
