Taoism and the Practices of a Long Life: Methods of "Nourishing the Vital Principle" in the Ancient Taoist Religion. How to Communicate with the Taoist Gods

This book combines two independent works, published by the renowned sinologist Henri Maspero, which after the author's death were combined, along with other works from his pen, under the title "Taoism and Chinese Religion".
The two works included in this volume share the characteristic of offering ancient Taoist methods, which to some extent evoke those offered by Yoga, given the emphasis given to practical exercises.
"Methods of Nourishing the Vital Principle in the Ancient Taoist Religion" focuses on the techniques used to nourish the vital principle, both through "breathing nourishment" and by certain sexual exercises, with the aim of extending life.
"How to Communicate with the Taoist Gods" teaches the methods used by the ancient Taoists to contact the gods, inner powers residing in the adept's own body, in order to enlist their help and guidance.
