Hello. I'm Dr. Jeffrey Tate. I am a physician who specializes in treating overweight. My training has been in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and bariatrics (the medical specialty of treating overweight). Since 1998 I have treated over 2000 individuals for overweight--beginning with myself; I keep off about three pants sizes by following a low-carb diet. Through this clinical experience, I have found that overweight is virtually always due to an addiction to sugary or starchy foods. Therefore, I have learned to use the methods of treating alcoholism and other addictions to help overweight persons achieve lifelong "carbohydrate sobriety." When carb sobriety is achieved, overweight, high-blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and high triglycerides are eliminated for the vast majority of individuals. I have put everything I know about how to achieve carbohydrate sobriety into this book. In fact, in working with patients most of my activity involves coaching them in the application of the ideas that are in this book. Almost every patient who does not drop out of treatment (and this is most patients) achieves a minimum weight loss of 15% of their initial weight (that's 30 pounds for a 200-pound person; 45 pounds for a 300-pound person). If they don't then lose focus in the psychological "comfort zone" induced by losing that much weight (about 25% do lose focus), patients can go on to achieve a fully normal weight--without ever being hungry. Those who maintain an interest in using the techniques for carb sobriety rarely regain significant weight. This book is given to every overweight person I treat. They frequently comment that it explains their weight and eating problems better than anything else they have ever read or heard. They consistently find the ideas in this book to be the most powerful tools they've found for losing weight--and for maintaining weight loss.
