A likely first Everyman's Library edition, 1953. A collection of essays originally published in the English literary journal "The Tatler." The journal was established in 1709 by Richard Steele, only to be disbanded after two years so the successor journal "The Spectator" could be launched by Steele and partner Joseph Addison. Edited, with an introduction, by Lewis Gibbs. Number 993 in Everyman's Library Essays & Belles-Lettres series. --- In Everyman's Library larger format binding style 4. Full plum cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling and gilt interlocked "EL" in script at tail of spine; pale orange topstain. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- With prior owner's signature to half title page and small white smudge to spine, otherwise a tightly-bound, unmarked copy.; 12mo - 7 to 7-1/2 in. tall; xiv, 304 pages.
