Tattooing the Invisible Man: Bodies of Work

Determined to be a tattoo artist at the age of ten and tattooing professionally since
1967, California native Don Ed Hardy has become one of the world's leading tattoo
artists. Inspired by traditional Japanese work, he was instrumental in developing the
medium's fine art potential and fueling the late-century international tattoo boom.
Tattooing the Invisible Man presents a survey of Hardy's paintings, etchings,
lithographs, drawings, photographs, and elaborate tattoos, over 500 color
illustrations, most never before published.

Don Ed Hardy (b. 1945) lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, he divides his time between painting, drawing, and printmaking; writing and publishing; and operating his San Francisco studio, Tattoo City. He has written, edited, and published 19 books on tattooing and related contemporary culture, and has co-curated three major traveling exhibitions documenting tattoo art. His artwork is in numerous public and private international collections, as well as in the skins of thousands of people.
