Reviews
These four volumes launch a new series of gardening guides based on the authoritative classic, Taylor's Encyclopedia of Gardening (Houghton Mifflin, 1961. 4th ed.) The new guides constitute a major revision and redesign of that work. Each self-contained book includes new essays on the botany and cultural requirements of its subject. Other chapters by new contributors cover basic gardening techniques, garden design, and flower arranging. Calendars of gardening activities adapted to different growing regions in the country, and mail order sources for seeds, bulbs, and planting stock, are also included. The most appealing parts of the guides are the brand new color photographs and the revised encyclopedic descriptions of the plants. Each guide contains more than 400 color photographs arranged by class of flower. The descriptions include information on size and habits and have line drawings of the shape of the mature plant. Thoroughly indexed by Latin and common names and finished with sewn bindings that lie flat when opened, these guides are both easy and pleasant to use. Recommended for all gardening collections. (Four more titles are planned for next spring). Peter C. Leonard, Carnegie Lib. of Pittsburgh
