A Teacher's War: To Iraq and Back with the Inchon Scouts

After September 11, Bill Arnold felt torn between two obligations: his family at home and the Marines deploying to war. He deployed, though leaving his family was the hardest decision he'd ever made.

In 2004, Major Arnold deployed to Fallujah as commander of Scout Platoon, Regimental Combat Team - 1. For a year, he and his Inchon Scouts operated in one of Iraq's most dangerous cities, where survival required trust, tactical skill, and unshakable bonds. Arnold discovered that war resists simple narratives; war is chaos and clarity, violence and calm, decisions made with incomplete information that carry lifelong consequences.

With unflinching honesty and humility, Arnold examines the Iraq War through two lenses: as a Marine officer responsible for his men's lives, and as a history teacher, questioning what victory means. A Teacher's War: To Iraq and Back with the Inchon Scouts explores the true costs of combat, the weight of command, and the long journey home. This is a memoir for anyone seeking to understand not just what happened in Fallujah but what war demands of those who fight it-and those who must live with its aftermath.
