About the Author
Robert J. Marzano, PhD, is cofounder and chief academic officer of Marzano Resources in Denver, Colorado. During his fifty years in the field of education, he has worked with educators as a speaker and trainer and has authored more than fifty books and two hundred articles on topics such as instruction, assessment, writing and implementing standards, cognition, effective leadership, and school intervention. His books include The New Art and Science of Teaching, Leaders of Learning, Making Classroom Assessments Reliable and Valid, the Classroom Strategies series, Managing the Inner World of Teaching, A Handbook for High Reliability Schools, A Handbook for Personalized Competency-Based Education, and The Highly Engaged Classroom. His practical translations of the most current research and theory into classroom strategies are known internationally and are widely practiced by both teachers and administrators.
Dr. Marzano received a bachelor's degree from Iona College in New York, a master's degree from Seattle University, and a doctorate from the University of Washington.

Seth D. Abbott is a teacher at John E. Flynn, a Marzano Academy, in Westminster, Colorado. He has taught in Westminster Public Schools (WPS)―a pioneer in personalized competency-based education (PCBE)―for thirteen years, where his innovative style quickly brought him to the forefront of the PCBE movement. Within WPS, Seth has been a leader in the development of competency-based tools, practices, and procedures, and has represented the district on an international scale. He has advised, consulted, and conducted trainings for districts and organizations around the world in advocacy of PCBE.
In February of 2019, Seth became the first teacher to achieve Level 3 in the Marzano Resources High Reliability Teacher™ program. He has written for numerous blogs and has been featured on podcasts as an expert in the field of competency-based teaching. He is a regular presenter at the WPS Summit, a national competency-based education conference held annually in Colorado. Seth received a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver.
