About the Author
Jamila M. Kareem, PhD, is an associate teaching professor of writing at the University of California Santa Cruz and an award-winning scholar in writing studies. A CCCC Scholars for the Dream Travel Award recipient, Dr. Kareem's award-winning scholarship has appeared in the peer-reviewed journals Literacy in Composition Studies, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and Journal of College Literacy and Learning, and in numerous edited collections in her research area of critical race theory and racial hierarchies in writing education. She is currently a lead editor on the latest edition of Macmillan Learning's EasyWriter composition handbook. In her free time, she is a proud Trekkie, K-drama nerd, and ARMY.
Mark Reynolds retired from teaching English after thirty-seven years at the community college in Brewton, Alabama, now named Coastal Alabama Community College. He has published a number of articles about writing, reading, and professional issues related to two-year college teaching, and he edited two book collections about teaching English in two-year colleges. From 1994 to 2001, he edited Teaching English in the Two-Year College, and in 2011, the national TYCA executive committee named TETYC's annual Best Article Award after him. In retirement, he continues occasional professional writing. Currently, he assists those interested in the history of two-year college English and he mentors community writers. Recently, with several others he created a three-week series of programs and readings celebrating community writers in the Brewton area. He continues to walk five miles and exercise daily and makes sure to laugh at himself seven to ten times a day. He can be reached at markreynolds208@gmail.com.
Darin Jensen is an associate dean and associate professor of English, linguistics, and writing studies at Salt Lake Community College. He is the editor of Teaching English in the Two-Year College. He and his coeditor, Dr. Brett Griffiths, won the Mina Shaughnessey Prize and the Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award for Two-Year College Writing Studies: Rationale and Praxis for Just Teaching. He works with MLA to facilitate professional development for reading and writing pedagogies for open-access institutions. He is probably busy with email or working in his garden.
Alfredo Celedón Luján is from Nambé, New Mexico. He has been highly educated as a cashier and stocker for Safeway, Piggly Wiggly, and 7-Eleven stores. He took additional advanced courses in gas-station attending; state-department go-ferring; dump-truck driving; weed chopping; post-hole digging; basketball, volleyball, and track coaching; and teaching. He has been an NEH fellow, a bedfellow, and a rock-throwing fellow. He has dug many ditches. His most effective teacher was the shovel. His formal education includes stints as a make-do student at Nambé Elementary School, Canyon Abyss School, Central-Anglo Grammatical Canon School, The Nutritional Junior High School, Howdy Dowdy Crowdy School, and Mesa Plateau School. As a tentative student, he graduated from Pojoaque High School. As a provisional student he received degrees from New Mexico State University and the Bread Loaf School of English. His writing has appeared in What Is College-Level Writing? (Volumes I and II); Deep Reading; Engaging American Novels; Making Sense: A Real-World Rhetorical Reader; Courageous Leadership in Early Childhood Education; Trickster; English Journal; California English; La Herencia del Norte; Bread Loaf and the Schools; New Mexico Humanities Review; and Writers Without Borders, among other books and periodicals. He's still kicking.
Luján has taught at Pojoaque Valley Schools and the Native American Prep School located in San Miguel County, New Mexico. He is also the former dean of students and teacher of English at Monte del Sol Charter School, a public charter high school in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is also a former president of NCTE. He retired from Monte del Sol in 2023.
