What if great teaching started with understanding people?

Teaching is not just about knowing a subject. It is about understanding learners, building trust and creating the conditions where learning feels possible.

In Teaching Starts With People, Wayne Smith shares his journey from disruptive student to teacher, lecturer and education leader. Through honest stories, practical strategies and real educational insight, he explores how connection, engagement and understanding can help learners move from “I can’t” to “I can.”

Written for teachers, trainee teachers, teaching assistants, lecturers, trainers and anyone supporting learning, this practical reflective guide offers clear ideas, reflection tasks and a useful toolkit to help you teach with confidence, clarity and purpose.

Inside this book, you will find practical ways to:

• build trust with reluctant learners
• create engagement and make learning meaningful
• explain ideas clearly and structure learning effectively
• respond to behaviour without escalating conflict
• adapt teaching for SEND, adult learners and different settings
• reflect on your practice using tasks and toolkit prompts

With real stories, practical tools and a clear message, Teaching Starts With People is for anyone who wants to understand learners better and make learning feel possible.

Because when learners feel understood, they are more likely to believe in what they can become.
