Goal of Book
When I first began teaching, I emulated my high school & college teachers. While this teaching style was great for teaching information, facts, theories, etc., I soon found it less effective at helping others grow in their character.
As I searched for more effective teaching techniques, I found that most books & seminars focused on teaching information. Even so, over the years, I have figured out how to teach transformational, rather than informational, lessons. This series condenses 27 years of books, seminars, a Master of Divinity, & a Ph.D. into a simple, practical, step-by-step, transformational, teaching format.
Book 1 lists several clear, easy-to-understand, practical foundational principles that make informational lessons, transformational. Then, Book 2 (Teaching To Transform Not Inform 2), provides the step-by-step process I follow when creating Transformational lessons. Here, I will help you integrate the 7 elements that should be in every lesson that has life-change as its primary goal.
Reviews
Immensely practical! I used Book 1 & 2 for a Grad Level Teaching the Bible course I taught at Oral Robert University. I had the students make PowerPoint presentations based upon these texts which they could later use for teacher training in ministry. Great material, Dr. Simon! The books include good application exercises as well.

Great Book! We used this book in our Sunday Bible School Conference last year. It contains a wealth of information for Bible Teachers.

I've known for years that "just teaching truth" was not enough. But it was not until I read this series that I was able to help teachers understand how critical it was. This two book series is Biblical, practical, & understandable. It now is the foundation of our teacher development ministry at our church.

Two principles stand out as priceless to me. First, the 'sticky proverb' works great because it is like the sticky notes everyone uses to remind them of important things. The proverb acts like a sticky note for the mind, & it will get to the heart.
Second, Teaching more by teaching less. Being 76 years old, & having been saved since age 13; I have heard mostly informational teaching, & it doesn't do much for me. I always have to step back from it & find one point that I can remember that I need. That is my reaction, & my education includes a Bachelor of Theology.
I shared those two principles with my pastor, & to my surprise, he employed them in his next teaching session. Comments I heard were: "The best he has ever taught; that was a fantastic lesson; he really gave me something I can hang on to."

The two "Teaching Them To Obey" books are the best I've seen in explaining why our teaching needs to be transformational, rather than informational. Beyond that, Dr. Simon explains, in very clear & practical terms, exactly how to prepare a lesson that is biblically accurate & reaches learners' hearts as well as their minds in order to create & grow disciples of Christ. I can't wait to share this with the rest of our teachers. I am convinced it will transform our teaching!
