Some toning with heavy chipping to paper of spine and along the spine edge of the front cover. Some nicking and chipping to extremities of covers, with a large 55 x 15 mm chip to upper spine corner of rear cover. 10 circular stain to bottom corner of front cover near spine. Some bumping and dogear folds to corners of text, with a few small nicks to fore edge of initial pages. Binding still fairly sound despite chipping to spine. Born in Vermont in 1803, Orceneth Fisher made a name for himself as a pioneer minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church (later the Methodist Episcopal Church South) and as a writer. After beginning his career in Indiana, Fisher moved to Texas in 1841 and became the chaplain of the Congress of the Republic of Texas after four years. Ten years later, Fisher transferred to California, where he preached in San Francisco and Stockton. By 1860, Fisher was living in Corvallis, Oregon, and after a lien was placed on the young Corvallis College, he bought the college and its land at a sheriff's auction on behalf of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Fisher mainly wrote on the topic of baptism and the sacraments with the purpose of promoting the Methodist practice of infant baptism against the Baptist practice of adult baptism by immersion.
