Ten Discourses on the Present and Future Condition of the Church, in Connection With the Glorious Appearing of Our Lord

Ten Discourses On The Present And Future Condition Of The Church, In Connection With The Glorious Appearing Of Our Lord by John Langdale Brown. This nineteenth-century religious treatise compiles sermons preached in Hastings in 1833–1834 and argues that the visible church has grown lukewarm, self-satisfied, and worldly, with much evangelical preaching obscuring essential truths. Brown rejects both Arminian and ultra-Calvinist systems as distortions of Scripture and urges a return to the pure Word and the doctrine of the Gospel of the Kingdom—the present and future reign of Christ on earth. The work includes a Preface and Introduction, followed by two parts: Part I condemns lukewarmness, self-satisfaction, and Christless worship, and urges repentance and holy living in light of Christ’s promised coming. Part II surveys the Jews’ restoration and the present dispensation, leading to a visible earthly kingdom, the resurrection of the just, and the end when God delivers up the kingdom. He exhorts ministers and congregations to repentance, holiness, and readiness for Jesus’s return.
