A group of ten (10) items of clothing handmade in the 1860s for paper dolls, including two (2) dresses, five (5) capes or mantles, and three (3) skirts. Materials used to create the pieces include embossed paper, marbled and patterned paper, tissue paper, paper hand-patterned with ink, coated paper, and small scraps of metallic gold paper used for detailing. Pleating has been used on one of the skirts, giving it a particularly fabric-like appearance and feel. Each dress has both a back and front, and is designed to slip over the doll's head. The mantles/capes are tri-fold for the same purpose. Several of the pieces have names written in ink manuscript on their versos, including: Marguerite de Beoldchild; Madame Ceafarelly; Madame de Bergerue; M[?] de Mahlenberg; and Elisabeth d'Aubuison. Together, they represent a very attractive set of handmade items for paper dolls. The smallest piece measures approx. 2.25" by 3.25", while the largest measures approx. 4.5" by 5.25" One outfit has been hand decorated with fine geographic diamonds. Very good.
