Hardcover (volumes I and II). Condition: Very Good. Volume I 354pp, Volume II 348pp. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (volumes I & II), published by Downey & Co [1898]. The Thornton Edition, edition by Temple Scott. An 1898 edition of Anne Brontë's second novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, complete in two volumes. Often considered one of the first feminist novels, the novel takes on themes of marital abuse and social conventions as it tells the tale of Helen Graham, an artist living in seclusion with her son in an Elizabethan manor, and the subject of much harsh gossip and isolation from the local village. From the Thornton Edition, the pair were published by Downey & Co. Volume I contains a portrait of Anne Brontë at the front (loose in book and with tissue guard). They are bound in green cloth with gilt spine titling and ornate decoration. The cloth shows a small amount of wear, no bent corners and no fading. Very small amount of wear to head and tail. Gilt edge to top of text block, with the rest being deckled. Some browning to pastedown and FREP. Blind stamp to FEP from a previous bookseller (Wilson & Son Rotherham). Monochrome frontispiece of the author and red and black titling on half-title and title pages. No annotations with pages clean and clear. Wonderful condition for the year.
