Tender and True: a Colonial Tale Volume 2

Tender And True: A Colonial Tale by Catherine Helen Spence traces the trials and moral education of a young colonial society across two volumes. In Adelaide and the bush, the strong-minded Rose Lancaster becomes a focal point of North’s schemes as he manipulates marriages and business ventures to advance his family’s interests, while his wife Mary and Rose’s sisters navigate love, duty, and independence. The Lancasters, led by Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster and their daughters, join Adelaide society; North’s influence and Mary’s sensibility are challenged by Miles Davanent, a wealthy bush magnate who courts Rose. A sequence of romantic entanglements ensues: Rose’s reluctant courtship of Davanent, her eventual engagement to Edward Mansfield, and Lizzy Newton’s tragedy, including Davanent’s misguided attempt to arrange Lizzy’s marriage to a mining partner, which leads to Lizzy’s ruin and death, and his later repentance. The narrative culminates in reconciliation: Mary and North heal their marriage, Rose and Edward marry, Davanent returns to England, and the wounded bush community slowly rebuilds. The novel examines gender roles, social aspiration, and domestic virtue in a colonial context, balancing sentiment, critique, and social observation.
