About this Item

4to. Original blue-green plain wrappers. Wear, soiling and small tears present. Collation: vi, 26 pp. Text is very clean with only minor age discoloration along edges. One of the group of beetles listed in this dissertation on the family of Cantharidiae are the blister beetles with the Lytta or Spanish Fly e known for their secretion of an odorus and poisonous chemical, cantharidin, that is passed on by the male to the female during mating. The female coats her eggs with this chemical as a protection against predators. "Cantharidin was first isolated in 1810 by Pierre Robiquet, a French chemist then living in Paris, from Lytta vesicatoria. Robiquet demonstrated that cantharidin was the actual principle responsible for the agressively blistering properties of the coating of the eggs of that insect, and established that cantharidin had very definite toxic and poisonous properties comparable in degree to that of the most violent poisons known in the XIXth century, such as strychnine."
