Test of General Electric Recording Steam Flow Meter, Type R Form D: Thesis for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering; College of . of Illinois, 1911 (Classic Reprint)

This book presents a detailed analysis of a steam flow meter extensively tested by the author. These tests sought to determine the accuracy of the meter and consistency of its readings. The author carefully describes the construction, set-up, principles, and operation of the meter before delineating the test procedures and extracting the data. They present three main observations from the data. First, though the meter's readings generally align with the actual flow, they tend to underestimate the flow rate, requiring calibration to improve accuracy. Second, errors in the readings are not connected to the quality or pressure at which the meter is utilized. Third, because the meter lacks precision and is not well-suited to calibration, it is of limited value for efficiency tests or boiler tests. In the end, the author concludes that while the meter could be valuable as an aid for testing efficiency or boilers if it were more accurate or could be accurately calibrated, the model tested is not.
