Gr 7 Up Young and Horne have taken dramatic, chilling, and illuminating sections from various slave narratives and arranged them in chronological order, beginning in 1831 with Louis Asa-Asa's account. Excerpts from the writings of Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, and Solomon Northup are included. Useful background information is provided throughout. Except for the selections completed in the 1930s and the recollections of Nat Love, a famous black cowboy, all describe experiences under slavery and how escape was achieved.
