A celebration of Sterling's eccentric astronomical poem which awed critics including his friends Ambrose Bierce and Jack London but baffled publishers. With debts to both Tennyson and H. G. Wells, Sterling blended science, science fiction, and philosophy to portray the constant warring of stars and galaxies and the folly of humans who ascribe to them changelessness and take them as evidence of our own immortality. This elaborate facsimile edition highlights Ambrose Bierce's early involvement in the poem and also includes an introduction by Oscar Lewis and a memoir of Bierce by Albert Bender.
