Testimony of a Witness

Patriarchy believes its rooms are sealed. They never were.

E. R. Davis spent nearly three decades inside male-only space, placed there by a sorting system that misread her at birth and never once checked who was in the room. Autistic, she emitted none of the automatic social signals by which men verify each other, and so she was not excluded but unrendered: present, unperceived, and trusted with speech no woman was meant to hear. She kept a ledger. Then she transitioned, crossed permanently to the other side of the door, and began receiving in daily conduct exactly what she had heard rehearsed in speech for thirty years.

The Testimony of a Witness is the deposition that impossible position makes possible. It moves chronologically from the atmospheric contempt of a Southern childhood, through the caste system of boyhood and the moral vacuum chamber of adolescence, into the adult liturgies of the fraternity and the job site, down into the radicalization pipeline the author entered and escaped, and out through the crossing into women's space at last. It ends in a verdict addressed to the men still standing in those rooms, and the verdict contains work.

This is not a theory of what men say when no women are present. It is testimony, corroborated throughout by the social science of the same period, from an unimpeachable witness: someone patriarchy itself required to be in the room. Ignorance, after this book, is no longer available as a defense.
