Synopsis

At the age of 12, Roland Warnock was a working cowboy on the huge Guadalupe Ranch in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. He took part in trail drives, fought Mexican banditos and saw his father killed on the streets of Mission, Texas. From there he moved to San Angelo, Texas, before getting a place of his own at Fort Stockton in 1919. In 1973, his grandson, Kirby F. Warnock, recorded nearly 18 hours of tape of his oral memoirs of the last days of the Texas frontier. Not the movies, but the real thing, Texas Cowboy is the old west the way it really was from a man who lived it.

About the Author

Kirby F. Warnock is a 1974 graduate of Baylor University with a B.A. in history. His writings have appeared in Texas Monthly, Southwest Airlines Magazine and the Dallas Times Herald. He wrote and produced the PBS documentary Return To Giant, and currently is the editor of Big Bend Quarterly magazine.
