Add to basketModern binding for a collection of 234 photographs documenting North American Textile Winding Machines 1921-1936. Binder with blue boards, cloth spine with gilt title on leather laid down, measures 8.75 x 12 x 3 inches. Photos measuring 8 x 10 inches are mounted on recto and verso of each leaf. Black and white photos with labels in very good condition exhibiting light soiling and edge wear. This curious collection compiles a large variety of Textile Winding Machines used in North American Mills from 1921-1936. Most photos are numbered in the negative which corresponds to the accompanying label text giving technical information on each machine. There are many different mills and several different makes and models represented which begs the question as to why this set was compiled. Usually, these industrial photo books document singular companies or manufacturers. Nonetheless, someone spent many years compiling this archive going so far as to stage each photo with a folding white backdrop which appears to be the same throughout the collection. In its simplest term, winding machines wraps cloth onto a spool and are found in any textile operation. Mills were prevalent through the 19th and mid-20th century throughout the Eastern United States. A few mills listed include Lewiston Bleachery in Maine, Monson Worsted in Massachusetts, Cohn-Hall-Marx of New York and the Mooresville Cotton Mill in North Carolina. Winding Machine Manufacturers represented include: Springfield, DG and Kaumagraph with Springfield well represented. Perhaps this archive represents the career of a salesman who represented several manufacturers and photo-documented his sales for this 15 year period. Regardless, we have a fine collection of photos documenting textile winding machines.
