Before writing his first children's book And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, published in 1937, Geisel worked as a political cartoonist, an advertising illustrator, and a documentary filmmaker. Checker compiles some of the rarer cartoons created by Geisel in this one-of-a-kind collection. Volume 2 includes magazine and book illustrations, advertising illustrations, and other hard to find pieces.

Review
Everything delightfully attests that Geisel developed early the wonderfully athletic, loopy line (reminiscent of the physical comedy of Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd) and the benignly goofy humor (greatly inspired by his cartoonist forebear, Rube Goldberg) that stood him in good stead throughout his long career. Ray Olson --Book List
All that said, childhood fans, American history buffs, and parents who read nightly the escapades of certain primary-coloured fish, cats in hats and Sam s unusual breakfast choices will love this round-up of the earliest and perhaps the best of one of the greatest creative illustrators of our time. Nora Mohony --Compulsive Reader
This book is a treat, particularly for anyone who either grew up with Dr. Seuss books or shared them with their own children. The clear signs of genius - and a crazy sense of humor -are all linked together by Geisel's unmistakable visual style. I really enjoyed seeing how this beloved figure got his start. Tom Knapp --Rambles
