The Theology of Sin

The Theology of Sin: A Biblical, Historical, and Pastoral Exploration by Fr. George Alberto Gonzalez offers a comprehensive examination of one of the most central doctrines in Christian theology. The book seeks to recover a clear and robust understanding of sin by engaging Scripture, the history of Christian thought, and the pastoral realities of human life. Rather than reducing sin to mere moral imperfection or psychological weakness, the study presents it as a profound rupture in humanity’s relationship with God that affects the individual heart, human society, and even creation itself.

The work unfolds in four major movements. The first explores the biblical foundations of sin, tracing its origin in the Fall, its spread through early human history, and its treatment in the Law, the Prophets, the teachings of Jesus, and the writings of the Apostle Paul. The second section examines the historical development of the doctrine, engaging key theological voices from the early Church through the Reformation and into modern theology.

The third part provides a systematic analysis of the nature and effects of sin, addressing themes such as guilt, corruption, spiritual death, and the cosmic consequences of human rebellion. The final section turns to pastoral and practical implications, reflecting on temptation, repentance, spiritual struggle, church discipline, and the hope of renewal in Christ.

Throughout the book, Fr. Gonzalez emphasizes that understanding sin is essential for understanding grace. Only when the depth of humanity’s brokenness is recognized can the transforming power of redemption in Christ be fully appreciated.
