Theory of Classification

This book provides a coherent account of the theory of classification. It discusses the contribution made by theoreticians like E.C. Richardson J.D Brown W. Hulum W.C. Berwick Sayers H.E. Bliss and S.R. Ranganathan. However the theory put forward by S.R. Ranganathan predominates the whole book because his contribution is far more than anybody else's. Five major schemes of classification library of congress classification colon classification and bliss bibliographic classification have also been discussed. Library classification is a specialized area of study and now it has become a vast and complicated subject using highly technical terminology. In recent years there has been some decline in the study of classification but in the changing context especially due to introduction of computers new approaches to classification are being studied with vigour giving an impetus to this area. A special attempt has been made to provide descriptions as simple and direct as could be possible.
