Third and Dead

The fantasy football championship came down to 3.18 points. A garbage-time catch. A lateral nobody called. Jake Malone watched it happen on his phone at a Chicago bar while his league chat filled with memes and Ethan Carter climbed a barstool to accept his third consecutive title.

Nobody died. It was just a game.

Jake knows that.

He is forty-one, a cybersecurity director at a financial firm, a man who has spent his career understanding how systems fail and who is responsible when they do. He understands identity. He understands attribution. He understands how a story, told the right way, can make the author invisible.

He uses all of it.

Third and Dead follows Jake's descent from wounded pride to something the country will spend months arguing about. It is told alongside FBI Special Agent Sarah Kessler, who is assembling the case one careful inference at a time, and Lisa, Jake's wife, who saw something wrong before anyone else and could not stop what was already in motion.

A novel about humiliation and narrative. About the gap between a man's self-image and his behavior. About how ordinary people become the things they never planned to become, one reasonable decision at a time.
