Jack (London), 4 1/8 x 5 3/8 inches tall hardbound, no dust jacket, pale green decorated paper-covered boards, red lettering to front cover and spine, floral decorated endpapers, engraved title page, title page and frontispiece ruling in red, [6], 156 pp. Moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with sun-darkening to spine. Chipping to the fore edges of a couple of pages where a signature was opened inelegantly. Otherwise, apart from very slight age toning, a very good copy - clean and unmarked - of this uncommon book of selections, with a 14-page introduction, from the beloved Christian devotional classic, The Imitation of Christ. The editor is only identified as The Right Rev. Lord Bishop of Ripon, possibly the Anglican prelate Lucius Smith, who served from 1905-1934. Ripon is a city in North Yorkshire, England. OCLC (No. 24054280) locates only three copies at institutions worldwide - one at Harvard, one at the College of Saint Benedict / Saint John's University in Minesota and one at Maastricht University Library in The Netherlands. ~KM5~ The Imitation of Christ was written by Catholic monk Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471), as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427, at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order, followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. There is probably no other book apart from the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations.
