Size 6.0 x 9.0 inches. Bound c. 1931 by Birdsall of Northhampton in full green morocco with single fillets border and central varicoloured vignette onlay of Beagle Hound. Gilt framed and ornamented compartments. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Broad turn-ins with gilt rolls. Marbled endpapers. In good condition. Spine slightly sunned and along top edges. Occasional small marks and foxing spots. Else a clean and tight copy. 321pp. plus 5pp adverts With engraved frontis and illustrations in text. A classic book on hunting in England, with hounds, for foxes, rabbits, and deer. Each chapter is a letter which details different aspects of fox and hare hunting etc covering kennels, scents, diseases, care and feeding of hounds, breeding and care of a hunter. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First published 1899. Dust jacket with protective plastic cover. Tanning on inside cover. Some foxing (how appropriate!). Author (1740-1811) was a sportsman and famous master of fox hounds (though today, the descriptions may be a contradiction in terms!). As a contemporary wrote, 'Never had fox or hare the honour of being chased to death by so accomplished a hunter'. I'm sure the fox and hare would have agreed! But still an important source for social, cultural and agrarian history at the time of the Industrial Revolution. 220 pages. Quoted postage for UK 2nd class. Overseas at least £11.65.
