The Thoughts, Letters and Opuscules of Blaise Pascal

"The Thoughts, Letters And Opuscules Of Blaise Pascal" by Blaise Pascal. The collection surveys Pascal’s mid-17th-century Port-Royal milieu and brings together contemplative essays, intimate letters, and devotional tracts that frame his critique of reason, faith, and social order. It argues that human reason alone cannot attain true knowledge or lasting happiness, proposing two orders of truth: demonstrable knowledge of the mind and felt assent of the heart through faith. The text contrasts natural reason with revealed religion and examines how custom, authority, and fear shape laws and justice, while staging a dialogue between skeptical doubt and dogmatic certainty. It treats amusement as a distraction from mortality, presents the wager on God as a prudent bet when proofs falter, and offers Christianity as the answer to human greatness and misery through grace and conversion. Writings address the Jewish-Christian narrative, the nature of God and knowledge, and the unity of body and soul under divine order, within a Port-Royal ecological of editors, correspondents, and ecclesial debates.
