Thoughts on Preaching: Specially in Relation to the Requirements of the Age

Thoughts On Preaching: Specially In Relation To The Requirements Of The Age is a mid-19th-century treatise by Daniel Moore that argues for the primacy and proper cultivation of preaching as an ordained divine ordinance. The work surveys the historical standing of preaching, defends its divine authority, and examines how to adapt sermonizing to an advancing, increasingly educated age. It covers the office and aims of preaching, the intellectual demands of the present age, and the final object of preaching as persuasive communication. Moore discusses the structure and unity of a sermon, the art of style, the subject-matter of preaching, the delivery of sermons, and the comparison between extempore and written discourses. It also includes supplemental topics such as expository preaching, catechizing, sermons to children, open-air preaching, and working-class services, arguing for a balanced, biblically grounded, and pastorally effective ministry. First published in London in 1861, this work remains a substantial guide for clerical practice and the understanding of preaching in its relation to the needs of the age.
