A Radical Response to the Louisiana Purchase Massachusetts Farmer. [Lowell, John, Jr. (1769-1840)]. Thoughts in a Series of Letters, In Answer to a Question Respecting the Division of the States. [Boston?]: S.n., [1813]. 24 pp. Octavo (9-1/4" x 5-3/4"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in plain blue (sugar paper) wrappers, untrimmed edges. Light soiling and a few minor stains "(1)" in early hand to front wrapper, spine perished, wrappers secure, moderate toning and light foxing to interior. $500. * Only edition. The "Massachusetts Farmer" calls for the secession of the original states from "the illegitimate states beyond the Allegheny Mountains and Louisiana." An act of preservation, succession will prevent a nation too large and diverse to govern. Several sources, such as Sabin, attribute this pamphlet to Lowell.
