Spanning three centuries and three states, Reed Johnson s epic novel weaves the tale of three pairs of brothers in their search for a fabulously rich gold bonanza that lays hidden in the rugged Lost Creek Canyon in the Tarryall Mountains of Colorado. Along the way the brothers become directly involved in several events that had a great impact on the history of the West, such as Colonel Don Juan Beutista de Anza s war against the Comanche Indians who were ravaging the Spanish settlements throughout what is now northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.A Thread of Gold vividly takes the reader through the Civil War as it spread across the country and pitting brother against brother; as well as the hardship of Texas cattle ranching and the initial discoveries of gold in Colorado and the subsequent rush of men who were seeking to strike it rich. The elusive mother lode of gold is discovered, lost, and then discovered anew. In the hope of finding riches beyond their wildest dreams, the brothers brave blizzards, avalanches, cougars, grizzly bears, bootleggers, and robbers. The dramatic impact these experiences have on the brothers lives as well as their families make A Thread of Gold a fascinating page-turner.
