Three Chapters on Homer (Cont.) Comus. Evidences from the Classics and Hieroglyphics

Three Chapters On Homer (Cont.) Comus. Evidences From The Classics And Hieroglyphics by Robert Deverell. This scholarly work argues that ancient poets and writers encoded knowledge of the American continents in Homer, Virgil, and related traditions. In the Third Chapter on Homer, North and South America are described through Homeric imagery—the cyclopean eye of the Cyclops, Newfoundland’s elk, the Amazon and Andean zones, Cape Horn, and the West Indian archipelago—interpreted as signs of a detailed prehistoric awareness. The author extends the inquiry with Virgil and later hieroglyphic evidence, treating topics from the plague and Peruvian bark to gum lac and alum, suggesting a cross-cultural medical and geographic lexicon. Interwoven are plates and philological arguments showing America as a proper object of classical inquiry, anticipating modern global history. The volume situates Comus and Milton’s masque within a broader program to rehabilitate ancient cosmography and ethnography.
