Three Essays: On The Intermediate State Of The Dead. The Resurrection From The Dead. And On The Greek Terms Rendered Judge, Judgment, Condemned, Condemnation, Damned, Damnation, &C. In The New Testament. : With Remarks On Mr. Hudson's Letters In Vindication Of A Future Retribution, Addressed To Walter Balfour. Walter Balfour presents a critical study (1828) challenging the traditional view of an immortal soul and eternal punishment. The work comprises Introduction and three essays: Essay I examines the Scriptures on the state of man after death, arguing against the immortality of the soul and asserting that death is the state; it argues that the soul returns to God at death and that the resurrection is the sole hope. Essay II discusses the resurrection from the dead, including Jesus' resurrection and the general resurrection, defending a future life based on resurrection rather than immaterial soul. Essay III analyzes Greek terms krino, krisis, krima, etc., showing they do not necessarily imply post-mortem punishment, and critiques Mr. Hudson's Letters. The work also includes Remarks on Hudson's Letters, a polemical response to Universalist arguments, and a broader historical view of religious doctrine. The tone is argumentative, scholastic, and polemical.
